Fellows House

Directions

You can get ferries to the Island from Portsmouth, Southampton or Lymington. If driving from London to Portsmouth it is usually best to go down the A3 rather than the M3 via Southampton as the A3 is much more direct and is dual carriageway most of the way (except around Hindhead where they are building a new tunnel - due to be open in 2011). Please note on Friday evenings this route can get quite busy as everyone heads for the coast so it is usually best to set off a bit early if you can.

If driving, please ensure you have also read the advice on parking.

We have listed various driving options below but as there are so many different ways to get to Fellows House, we advise you to either print out all of the directions below or find the most appropriate route for your mode of transport.

Ferry Ports

The main options to getting to Cowes are shown below (links to the ferry websites appear on the right):

Route Service Crossing time Frequency (peak times) Journey time to Fellows House from port Operator
Portsmouth to Fishbourne Car/Passenger Ferry 40 mins Every 30 mins 25 mins Wightlink
Portsmouth to Ryde Passenger Fastcat 18 mins Every 30 mins 30 mins by taxi Wightlink
Southampton to East Cowes Car/Passenger Ferry 55 mins Every 60 mins 20 mins Red Funnel Group
Southampton to West Cowes Passenger RedJet 23 mins Every 30 mins 5 mins Red Funnel Group
Lymington to Yarmouth Car/Passenger Ferry 30 mins Every 30 mins 30 mins Wightlink

The quickest option is via the Red Jet to West Cowes, which only takes 23 minutes and is then a five minute walk to the house (please note they do not allow bicycles on this service and you have to get the car ferry instead). There is long-term parking at each of the ports if required.

Generally the Portsmouth to Fishbourne is the best option as it goes every 30 minutes (at peak times - so less wait if you happen to miss it) and if you turn up a bit early you can often get on the earlier ferry. The crossing is also short at only 40 minutes.

Directions from Ryde / Fishbourne / East Cowes / West Cowes / Yarmouth and Newport

Ryde to Fellows House

From Ryde - come out of the ferry terminal and head for Newport. At the roundabout take the third exit onto the A3055 signposted Newport. Carry along here then turn left onto the A3054 signposted Newport and then at the crossroads turn right onto the A3054 (signposted Newport). At the traffic signals bear right onto the A3054 (signposted Newport). At the ntraffic signals bear right onto the A3054 (signposted Newport). At the next roundabout take the second exit onto the A3054 (signposted Newport) you now come to a roundabout and have a choice:

Option 1 - via the Floating Bridge (a chain link ferry) - at the roundabout take the second exit onto the A3021 (signposted East Cowes), continue for about three miles past Osborne House, and continue forward onto the A3020 (signposted West Cowes). Follow the signs to West Cowes and you come to the chain link ferry or floating bridge.

Then follow directions below from the Floating Bridge.

Option 2 - via Newport - at the roundabout turn left (signposted Newport) and drivetoward Newport. As you go into Newport there is a sign on the right to Cowes at a set of traffic lights and you should get in the right hand lane and turn right. After 50 metres there is another set of lights and stay in the right hand lane and turn right signposted to Cowes. Continue up the dual carriageway and you come to a roundabout with B&Q on the right - then follow the directions below from Newport.

The choice of Floating Bridge or via Newport is really down to preference and everyone on the Island has a view. The Floating Bridge does cost money but you use less petrol so the cost is similar. The Floating Bridge can be the quickest if you time it just right and there are no queues. The general rule is that if you have to queue then the Newport route is quicker - of course you never know till you get there but at rush hour it can get busy (but so can Newport). The Floating Bridge is a feature of Cowes and so it is definitely worth using it once - and children usually love it. Either route you choose, the difference is counted in minutes so either one is usually fine.

Fishbourne to Fellows House

From Fishbourne - come off the ferry and through the terminal - at the exit of the terminal turn right. Follow the road till a T-junction and turn right (signposted Newport and East Cowes - A3054). Follow this road down through Wotton Bridge and after two miles you will come to a roundabout then you have the same choices as shown above either via the Floating Bridge or via Newport.

East Cowes to the Floating Bridge

From East Cowes - come out of the terminal and at the roundabout go straight-on, and up the hill. As you come round the right hand bend there is a right turn, signposted "West Cowes via the Floating Bridge". Turn right here and follow the road down to the Floating Bridge. Then follow the directions below from the Floating Bridge.

West Cowes Red Jet Terminal to Fellows House

From West Cowes Red Jet Terminal - come out of the ferry terminal and you will see some shops and a pub. Walk away from the ferry terminal (the sea to your back) with the pub on your left. You will go through a small covered part and then turn right - you are now on Cowes High Street. Walk up the High Street about 100 metres till you get to Market Hill on your left, turn left and walk up the small hill for about 50 metres and then turn right down Castle Road. Fellows House is about 150 metres on the right hand side of the road. It has a sign by the entrance and is actually number 27. Newport to Fellows House

Leaving Newport on the dual carriageway heading towards the Cowes sign you will see on the right some shops including Currys. You will come to a roundabout by B&Q - go straight on at the roundabout, signposted Cowes, and continue along this road to Cowes for a couple of miles. You then come to a fork in the road, turn left here (there is a Mazda/Honda garage opposite you), it is signposted "Cowes and Southampton". Carry along here for 1.5 miles to the end of the road, at the T junction turn left and then immediately right on to Baring Road and drive down Baring Road. After about one mile you should see Oakhill B&B (a large green coloured Victorian house) on the left. After about one hundred metres the road bears to the left but you want to go straight on as this is Castle Road - but please look left before going down Castle Road as there are often cars coming up Baring Road.
